What If Stan Lee and Steve Ditko Created Venom?

In Amazing Spider-Man #15 (August 1964) Stan Lee and Steve Ditko introduced Spider-Man's most popular, and persistent foe!

Stan Lee recalls;

"My memory is usually not so good on how and when we came up with these characters, but I'll never forget how we came up with Venom, it's such a crazy story! I had a dream one night about two guys with these far out names...'Pickle-my-knee' and 'McFarley', something like that. Anyway, I dreamt these guys came up with the ultimate Spidey villain, and he looked just like Spidey, except he had this creepy grin stretched across his face! When I woke up, I called Steve straight away, and here's the thing I can't explain to this day, Steve said he had the exact same dream! Now isn't that amazing? We knew then that we just had to put this guy in the very next issue!"

Ditko has never confirmed or denied whether Lee's unlikely tale is true, but whatever his origins, Venom was one of Lee and Ditko's most unique creations.

The cover above is, of course, Amazing Spider-Man #15 (August 1964) by Steve Ditko. The scary Spidey head is from Amazing Spider-Man #30, also by Ditko.

  1. Great concept for a different kind of Amalgam. You have my full support!

  2. I recently read Superman/Batman #24 and thought, "What if the Ultimates (Marvel) had fought against the Maximums?" (DC) I know that they are already like each other but I still think it would be interesting to see them fight,
    Soldier vs Captain America, Viking vs Thor, Robot vs Iron Man, Skyscraper vs Hank Pym (don't care which alter ego of his you use), Hornet vs Wasp, Wolfen vs Wolverine, Bug vs Spider-Man, and possibly Bowman vs Hawkeye. Think about it.
